Having trouble hearing on the telephone?

This is one of the most common difficulties faced by people who are hard of hearing.

If you are a Telstra customer you are eligible for the Telstra Disability Equipment Program (external link). The program provides 3 different telephones that have the facility to increase volume and are compatable with hearing aids users.

Hearing easily on the telephone can become difficult with a hearing loss. Hearing aids fitted with a telecoil will give you the widest range of possibilities.

Some tips for buying a phone

  • It is always best to request that you either try the phone before you buy and/or ask if the product can be returned if it is unsuitable for your hearing loss.
  • Remember that cordless phones will not work if there is a power failure.
  • Visual alerts are useful.
  • Some people find that a speaker phone facility works very well.
