Hearing loss information and support
Are you a Tasmanian living with hearing loss?
Hearing Link Tasmania has the time and the expertise to discuss how your hearing loss is affecting your life.
The reasons why your hearing deteriorates can be simple or complex. It may be the result of exposure to excessive noise, a medical condition or ageing, or it may be a combination of all these factors.
Perhaps your hearing loss is relatively mild and means that you sometimes misunderstand what people are saying to you or it may be that the extent of your hearing loss means you are unable to use the phone, hear the door bell, the television or participate in conversations.
Whatever its impacts on your life, there are a range of solutions and supports for individuals living with hearing loss. Please read below about some of the services that Hearing Link Tasmania can provide for you and your family.
The first step to managing hearing loss is to find out how severe it is. Our screening audiometrists are able to provide a free hearing test that will map exactly what components in the range of speech sound you are unable to hear.
Following the hearing screening, we will then explain your results and discuss with you how they affect what you can and can’t hear and what that may mean for your day to day life. We will also refer you for a full audiological assessment if further testing is needed.
A hearing screening will take approximately 20-30 minutes and is free of charge for any members of the community over the age of 14 years.
We have a designated day each week for providing free screenings in each of our offices:
Hobart: Free screenings are available every Tuesday, 9am-3pm. Please call (03) 6321 6501 to book.
Launceston: Free screenings are available the first Thursday of the month, 9am – 4pm. Please call (03) 6331 9766 to book.
Hearing Aid information
Depending on the extent of your hearing loss you may need assistance. We are able to provide objective information and advice about hearing aids, how they work, how to get best use from them and the range of options open to you.
As a first step, here’s a fact sheet about hearing aids that you can read. You’re also welcome to contact us to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
Technology testing and trials
Both of our Hearing Link Tasmania offices carry an extensive range of assistive technology that not only mean you can enjoy hearing the things that are important to you but will also keep you safe.
Devices range from personal amplifiers, television and sound devices, and a range of alerting systems for smoke alarms, doorbells and the telephone.
Subsidies for purchasing assistive devices are available for some members of the community so please contact us to find out what subsidies may be applicable to you or read up on our Subsidies for Hearing webpage.
